Gardening Workshop Reminder

Wednesday, May 18
7:30 p.m. 
at Will and Claire Ashby's home
 
We will discuss square foot gardening, grow boxes and drip irrigation. Please come with questions and answers. If you can't come, plant something you can eat anyway!  It is time to plant almost everything.   It might be a good idea to wait on planting tomatoes until  after the last frost, whenever that is!

Got Tomatoes?

Julie Stephenson wanted us to let y'all know that she has grundles of tomatoes that need to be picked and eaten, loved and canned.  These tomatoes are beautiful! They are huge and easy to skin (Tami made some salsa) Julie said you can call her cell phone if you want some 801-706-4537

and hey - Tami has sent along a delicious sounding recipe, if you need an idea of how to use all those delicious tomatoes!! 

Rachel's Tomato Basil Soup

Cook Time: 35 Minutes
Ready In: 40 Minutes
Servings: 6
"Fresh basil is the key to this delicious and creamy tomato soup. Serve with homemade French bread for a special treat!"
INGREDIENTS:
1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
1 (11.5 ounce) can tomato-vegetable
juice cocktail
1 (14.5 ounce) can chicken broth
20 fresh basil leaves, cut into thin strips
1 cup heavy cream
1/4 cup butter or margarine
DIRECTIONS:
1.In a large saucepan, combine the tomatoes, vegetable juice, and chicken broth. Bring to a boil, and cook for 30 minutes. Remove from heat, and stir in the basil. At this point, you may puree the soup if you wish. Add the cream and butter; return to medium-low heat, and stir until butter is melted. Serve immediately.

Home Gardening Course - Draper UT Stake

Here is some info on something that the neighboring Stake is doing, which we are welcome to attend, which is right up our Focus Alley!!

"Be prepared to grow large crops of delicious fruits and vegetables in your own garden. In this six week (2 hrs a week) course you will learn all the basic principles and practical gardening methods which make home gardening easy, enjoyable and productive: including varieties, planning, planting, soils, mulching, tilling, control of weeds, insects, and other pests, climate, watering, fertilizing, pruning, and fruit tree culture. You will come away with a "green thumb."

The instructor, Gordon Wells, is the author of "Successful Home Gardening", the 156 page textbook, which is free to all students. He has a Masters Degree in Agriculture from the University of California, Davis and has taught home gardening for many years. (For questions about this class call 801.423.2655)

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 2 - Mar. 9, 2010 (6 classes)
TIME: 7pm - 9pm., Draper Stake Center Chapel
LOCATION: 13085 S 300 E, Draper

This class is FREE to attend, the textbook is an online book that you can print on your own computer, and registration is not required but he does encourage attendance at the first class so that he knows how many handouts to bring. He will provide lots of handouts and each class will build on the previous one.

Garden Tour!

Claire Ashby has just informed us of a neat event....There will be a "Garden Tour" next Tuesday, July 14th at 9:30 am. You can purchase tickets at the Rose Shop (around $7). They will take you around to a bunch of different houses with beautiful yards and gardens. Sounds like lots of fun. Claire is definitely going if anyone wants to carpool. Another fun outing with sisters in our ward!!

Gardening Class Coming Up May 5th!

Hey all you green thumbs, or wannabees! We are having a gardening class on Tuesday May 5th @ 7:00 pm in Jeanette Pixton's backyard. We will be blessed to hear from one of the Master Gardener's from Thanksgiving Point. He will be teaching us about raised bed gardening, square foot gardening, and how to incorporate herbs and veggies into your regular landscapes.
